“Guess what you guys?!” Olivia exclaimed loudly as she threw open the door, home from school.
We all looked up from our various activities in the living room. “What?” I asked, trying to match her enthusiasm.
She just smiled at me.
“Oh no! You didn’t!” I pretended to be upset, masking my excitement.
But she just laughed. “It happened this morning, I was just sitting on the rug, twisting it like I always do, and it just popped out.”
“Was your teacher excited? Were your friends excited?” Surely the thrill we felt in our family must be felt by everybody!
But she just shrugged. “I think Mrs. Beckstead is used to things like this happening.” She handed me a plain white envelope folded in half. I peeked inside.
And there lay Olivia’s first lost tooth.
That night a celebration was in order, so ice cream it was!
And then, with the tooth tucked safely away in a new envelope beneath her pillow (after being lost for a few minutes), Olivia set off for dream land, with visions of tooth fairies dancing in her head.
